Introduction 

Participatory Slum Upgrading is a strategic urban development approach that places low-income communities, local authorities, development partners, and urban professionals at the centre of inclusive settlement transformation. Participatory Slum Upgrading Training Course provides practical knowledge and tools for community-led upgrading, informal settlement planning, affordable housing, basic infrastructure improvement, tenure security, climate resilience, public health, social inclusion, and sustainable urban development. Participants will explore participatory planning frameworks that strengthen community ownership while aligning slum upgrading initiatives with municipal development plans, environmental standards, and the Sustainable Development Goals. 

The course emphasizes practical approaches to transforming informal settlements through inclusive decision-making, stakeholder engagement, settlement profiling, infrastructure planning, land and tenure solutions, livelihood improvement, financing mechanisms, and monitoring and evaluation. Participants will examine international experiences and global case studies to understand how participatory upgrading can improve water and sanitation, roads, drainage, waste management, housing quality, public spaces, safety, resilience, and economic opportunities while minimizing displacement and strengthening long-term community sustainability.
