Course Overview

Informal Settlement Mapping and Enumeration Training Course

Introduction

Informal Settlement Mapping and Enumeration Training Course provides practical, data-driven knowledge and technical skills for identifying, mapping, profiling, and enumerating informal settlements using modern geospatial technologies, participatory approaches, and evidence-based urban planning methods. The course covers informal settlement identification, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, satellite imagery, mobile data collection, household enumeration, spatial analysis, settlement profiling, demographic assessment, infrastructure mapping, vulnerability assessment, and data quality assurance. Participants will learn how to generate reliable spatial and socioeconomic datasets that support inclusive urban development, land-use planning, housing strategies, service delivery, climate resilience, and evidence-based decision-making.

The training also emphasizes participatory mapping, ethical enumeration, community engagement, data protection, and the integration of geospatial information into urban upgrading programmes. Participants will examine international case studies and practical approaches used in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, including applications supporting housing improvement, infrastructure planning, tenure assessment, disaster-risk reduction, and Public-Private Partnership initiatives. The course equips professionals to transform settlement-level data into actionable intelligence for governments, development agencies, municipalities, humanitarian organizations, planners, and community-based institutions.

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
