Introduction

Governments throughout the world are turning their attention to small scale enterprises. This is because attempts to promote economic progress by establishing large industries have usually failed to improve the lives of the majority of the populations’ concerned. SMEs dominate the African private sector; the private sector is dominated by small and medium enterprises. He further argues that, SMEs are key players in promoting economic growth in Africa and in enhancing entrepreneurship and innovation. They can play a major role in keeping the economic dynamism of a country, in job creation and increase opportunities, security and empowerment of the poor

Who should attend

Senior managers responsible for strategic planning, marketing, and payment services. Mid-level to senior officials from central banks and government agencies dealing with regulation of the financial sector. Preference is given to applicants working on issues directly related to financial development and inclusion. Participants are expected to have a basic knowledge of economics or finance, or equivalent work experience. Knowledge of econometrics is helpful but not required

Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to

·         develop business models to deliver affordability in a sustainable way. 

·         Cite methodology and tools for enterprise strategic, financial and production planning

·         Outline means of improving capacity for trade, exports, investments, and access to markets

·         Describe best practices for facilitating the easy setting up of business targets, monitoring of business results and continuous improvement

·         Outline the links between SME business development, entrepreneurship and leadership;

·         Describe public-private SME partnerships at macro, meso, micro-levels

·         Illustrate SME development in a rural context, utilizing agri-business market development as a model

·         Outline what interventions are currently available to the participants to support and develop

·         SME entrepreneurship and business

·         Review effective organizational change management strategies

·         Illustrate stakeholder identification and integration strategies.

Methodology

The trainings are delivered through interactive lectures and group exercises facilitated by key resource persons who examine the themes of the training from a broad theoretical perspective down to case studies examining real world implementation. These presentations are augmented by small group exercises and frequent discussions from the floor, which serve to contextualize the issues being examined. After-action reviews that represent a key component of the training are also used. After-action reviews take place within groups at the start of each morning, discussing the main issues raised in the previous presentations, as well as the specific frames of reference as applied to these by participants.
