Training Course On Disaster Risk Reduction In Emergencies , Nairobi and Mombasa; Kenya

This is the most comprehensive course available for the field today. It is based on the context of global climate change and population growth, the number of natural and human-made emergencies every year has increased drastically in the past decade.  Although floods, earthquakes, droughts, and other natural hazards cannot be prevented, their impact on communities can be limited through disaster risk reduction (DRR) practices. You will learn the concept and practice of reducing disaster risks through systematically analyzing and managing the causal factors of disasters. For example, the course examines reducing exposure to hazards, lessening vulnerability of people and property, wisely managing land and the environment, or improving preparedness for adverse events.

Who Should Apply?

Government officials responsible for disaster management policy and planning; IFRC/ ICRC; international and local NGOs; NGOs involved in the areas of disaster risk reduction, response and recovery; staff from training institutes and other agencies responsible for knowledge dissemination on disaster risk reduction and management as well as training of trainers; persons involved in coordination of disaster management activities.

Course Objectives

On completion of this course you should be able to:

i.                    Demonstrate an understanding of the humanitarian context and underlying principles that inform disaster risk reduction

ii.                  Conduct a risk analysis that effectively identifies hazards, capacities and vulnerabilities of a community

iii.               Identify the stages of the disaster management cycle and appropriate DRR activities at each stage

iv.               Understand ways of strengthening the participation of local aid workers and different organizations in overall mechanisms of disaster risk reduction

v.                  Build collaborative partnerships and effectively coordinate DRR activities with key stakeholders

vi.               Monitor and evaluate risk reduction impacts of programmes

vii.             Effectively navigate the resources relating to DRR and resilience that can inform activities

viii.           Describe the importance of using a participatory approach throughout the disaster management cycle

a.      Basic disaster management terms and concepts

b.      Sendai Framework

c.       Targeted DRR programme options

d.      Introduction to hazard, vulnerability and capacity assessment (HVCA)

e.      Introduction to community participatory tools and techniques

f.        Organising and conducting a participatory risk assessment

g.      Planning DRR strategies appropriate to the context

h.      Monitoring and evaluating the impact of DRR strategies

i.        How to incorporate DRR into various humanitarian sectors

Methodology

The instructor led trainings are delivered using a blended learning approach and comprises of presentations, guided sessions of practical exercise, web-based tutorials and group work. Our facilitators are seasoned industry experts with years of experience, working as professional and trainers in these fields.

Key Notes

i. The participant must be conversant with English.

ii. Upon completion of training the participant will be issued with an Authorized Training Certificate

iii. Course duration is flexible and the contents can be modified to fit any number of days.

iv. The course fee includes facilitation training materials, 2 coffee breaks, buffet lunch and a Certificate upon successful completion of Training.

v. One-year post-training support Consultation and Coaching provided after the course.
